Poetry to art: by Stephen Page

Article text
Adams Rib by Stephen
I have multiple sclerosis, and I am a full time wheelchair user, and although I have had experience of art workshops before, I really don't know physically what I would be able to achieve. I am very much interested in discovering what might be possible, and one of my carers is also interested in participating in an art workshop, in her own right.

When I worked, I came into regular contact with artists and designers when I was Education Officer for Opera North in Leeds, and later as Development Director for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in Edinburgh.

Later I was the Director of an Arts Trust in Great Yarmouth concerned with regeneration, and in the context of this one of my initiatives was to open and operate a high quality gallery in the town centre.

I exhibited the work not only of local amateur and community artists, but also the work of local professional artists like Colin Self.

In spite of my serious disability, and limited manual dexterity, my voice is unaffected and I use voice-activated software to be able to write things such as this e-mail.

A few months ago, I received a grant award from New Writing South in respect of my poetry, and I suppose I am as interested in writing poetry based on the people I meet and the activities I can engage with."
