Beautiful spring time and outdoor sketching

We did our first local outdoor sketching session on 1 April and then at a different venue on 8 April and it was such a treat. On both days we had lovely spring weather without any rain! This Wednesday we met at Highdown Gardens and it was so beautiful. With lots of benches to sit on and so many things to choose to draw it was a perfect setting. The lovely drawing below is by Julie.

Our first trip was in East Preston where we sat and drew some beautiful spring trees, listening to gentle birdsong. It was so peaceful and for our small group of 6 was a first time event for some which was lovely.

Getting over the fear of drawing outside is a real thing, I remember when I went on my travels abroad and sat sketching on my own. In a group it is much easier and we had plenty of friendly smiles from people passing. I love these drawings, drawing from life is so different and everyone did so well, some drawing trees perhaps for the first time. Trees in spring show all of the structure of the tree before all the leaves appear but they can be tricky - lots of crossing branches to focus on!

Here are a few shots of us sitting and the lovely drawings, we all went for a lovely coffee afterwards in the Great Dane, a lovely couple of hours all round, thank you to those that came along.
